Evan Lee Powell (5/12/1954 - 12/23/2014)

Evan Lee Powell was 60 when he went home to heaven on December 23, 2014 due to chronic kidney failure.

Evan was a loving son, father, brother and uncle. He was born in Gary, Indiana on May 12, 1954, living most of his life in Huntsville, AL where he grew up with his parents Ed and Norma, and five siblings, David, Steven, Laurie, Susan and Chris.

Evan was a proud Eagle Scout and formidable athlete in his day. In his younger years, he especially enjoyed running and cycling. He loved adventure and meeting new people. After graduating from Huntsville High School, Evan traveled around parts of Europe and much of the United States. Upon his return, he attended and graduated from the University of Alabama at Huntsville with a degree in Political Science. His family members moved to various states, but Evan stayed in Huntsville, where he worked for 30 years as a production inventory control manager.

Evan was a renowned trivia buff and story teller and displayed a quick and humorous wit that kept family and friends laughing and on their toes. In a battle of wits with family members, Evan's most favorite quote was "Resistance is futile," which alluded to the "Borg" from Star Trek.

Evan was very thoughtful and caring and was always ready to offer a helping hand and encouraging words to anyone in their time of need. Whether it was helping someone move, fixing their car, or just being there with a shoulder to lean on, Evan lived Jesus' words to "think more highly of others than yourself." Evan taught Sunday School and served the Lord among his church family at Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church.

Four years ago, Evan relocated to Bessemer, AL for health reasons. He found a wonderful place to live at a boarding home owned by Felicia Moreland. Evan said Felicia was one of the nicest and most caring people he had ever met. He loved her and enjoyed sharing time with her family who would come by and visit from time to time.

Evan enrolled in Piper Place West where he found many new friends. He called Piper Place "school" and looked forward to going every weekday morning. Evan enjoyed playing chess, pool and many other activities with his friends at Piper Place. Evan was especially fond of the director of Piper Place, Mike Falligant. Evan spoke very highly of Mike and the two became close friends.

Evan's family is grateful to both Felicia and Mike for their genuine love and friendship that meant so very much to Evan. God could not have placed Evan in better hands than these two wonderful people.

Evan was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Evan is survived by his father Edwin Powell (Winchester, VA), his brothers David (Orange, TX), Steven and Chris (Salt Lake City, UT), and his sisters Laurie Powell (Winchester, VA) and Susan Braithwaite (Matthews, NC), as well as seven nieces and nephews.

Evan was preceded in death by his loving mother, Norma Powell, and his beloved son, Jake Foshee.

Evan’s family would like to thank all of those who attended his memorial service at Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church in Bessemer, AL, and for helping us celebrate Evan’s life. Evan was a bright and shining light in this world, and we take solace in the fact that he will live in our hearts and memories forever. We also know that at this moment he is living in his Father's kingdom in heaven and resting in the loving arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and that we will one day see him again when we join him in our Father’s house in heaven.

“God shall wipe all tears away from our eyes;
And there shall be no more death, nor crying,
Neither shall there be any more pain:
For the former things are passed away.
Revelation 21:4
